Make Art Not War

Wednesday, September 9, 2009 § 0

During the period of political liberalization of early 1968 Czechoslovakia an unknown artist created a print with now legendary protest phrase: "make art not war" which illustrated a kid holding a protest sign marching towards a soldier. Later on the artwork was first used as a source in the print Dis Obey (Phenomenology, etc. check them out here) which now does big propaganda campaigns based on street art.

Anyway, after seeing the print this summer I really liked not only the work, but the idea and meaning behind it. Stimulating and questioning are key reactions to Obey campaigns, and it inspired me to do some good old playing with photoshop. Enjoi.

HUGO...CREATE

So one big thing with this blog is to show my work (at all levels). So far you've only seen "personal" work, or the kind that is made to express ideas of my own, or campaigns of groups I belong to (by the way the work in my last post was made for a campaign that promotes diversity tolerance).

Now, as I think about my professional future I want to put together an Advertising portfolio. HUGO (BOSS) has a contest going on that encourages creative people around the world to design an advertisement based on the shape of the HUGO fragrance bottle and the theme is "simplicity."

I decided to give it a try, but I've been having a tough time capturing what "simplicity" means in terms of visual communication. These are some of the drafts I've made so far. All from scratch. No templates.

Early days...

Unlike most high schools mine required me to select an area of focus during my last year. I chose Arts & Humanities or "Area 4" There, I was introduced to my first Visual Communication class when I was 17, where I painted this dove wrapped in dynamite. Peace & Tolerance Fading Out is just one of my works during early days. More of these in the future.

For some time now I felt the need to start a digital journal in order to share my work and experiences. So here it is. On this first post I want to share an illustration idea that I've been struggling with. Stress. Just a draft. Subject: me. Theme: stress...(and management?) I've been trying to hand-trace this sort of sequence based on the pictures but it's taking a some time. Peace.
